What
are Sea Monkeys? Sea Monkeys are a race of small human like people who live under
the oceans. They have a telepathic ability to mask their true form to look more
like a water shrimp, however, when seen in their true form they spend their days
cooking, cleaning, and getting involved in normal family activities. Sea Monkeys
are....
Hold on, (ed) are you sure about this, "a race of small human like people"? Next
you'll be claiming Sea Monkeys are a four dimensional projection from a
trans-dimensional higher life form. Oh, you were coming to that? Lets just stick
with the actual facts about Sea Monkey's that we actually know.
Okay, the scientific name for sea monkeys is Artemia Salina, a species of brine
shrimp that the fossil record indicates hasn't changed in form for over 100
million years. It is closely related to the Triops. Sea Monkeys, as we'll
continue to call
them, were first discovered in 1758 living in salt water, however they are
rarely to be found in the sea mainly due to their defencelessness and are to be found
in salt lakes, most notably the Great Salt Lake where they live in vast numbers.
When Sea Monkeys eggs first hatch they are called 'nauplii' and measure about half a millimetre in length. They have just one eye at this stage of their development cycle that is limited to sensing light. Within four to six weeks they have fully matured and have grown two extra eyes as well as an ability to breathe through their feet. As they grow to full maturity they shed their outer shell about seven times and can go onto live for two years.
Sea Monkey eggs are very hardy which is how they have made their way into the popular Sea Monkey kits, given that they can be dried out then brought back to life with the right combination of water and ingredients. So next time someone asks you "what are Sea Monkeys?" you no longer have to mention their appearance changing telepathic abilities. We'll keep that a secret. For now. Until the revolution when we will salute our new Sea Monkey masters.
